On May 10, Professor Kyung-shick Choi took part in a panel on anti-Asian hate crime sponsored by the Korean Consulate General in Boston. The panel addressed the topic Stop Asian Hate: Phenomena, trends, social responses, and prevention. The consulate noted that the stigma of being Asian in America increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a surge in incidents such as bullying, harassment, physical encounters and even death. The panel analyzed the current state of such phenomena and the (social) media response, and examined both public and private sector efforts to combat bias crime against Asians.
Professor Choi spoke specifically about one of his projects, “Advanced Technological Countermeasures Against Anti-Asian Hate and Violence and Its Evidence-based Policy.” The project proposes technical solutions to prevent physical violence and harassment associated with hate crimes against Asians. Using the beta version of AI-based crime-prevention software, the project aims to build a hate crime database and to develop practical prevention methods.
